Off the Beaten Path for piano solo

While writing this piece, a partially-formed scenario struck me. I imagined two young children (Hansel and Gretel, perhaps?) standing at the entrance of a very tall and forbidding looking forest. They take tentative steps inside not quite sure what lies ahead. As they walk along a rock-strewn path, the trees become taller and more dense. The pathway is, by turns, fairly smooth at times becoming rocky with giant gnarled roots making the trek very uncomfortable. The music tries to follow their walk as everything becomes unbalanced until they reach the other side of the forest bringing them back to safety and reality.
